Macek, Lukáš ; Jelen, Libor (advisor) ; Hána, David (referee)
This diploma thesis puts into context political awareness and engagement of young people due to their educational process at secondary schools. Its goal is to evaluate fulfilment of the objectives previously set on the Czech grammar schools level. Specific focus is given on key competences which widen political and civic skills of pupils. With the help of extensive quantitative questionnaire which deals with geopolitical topics and following specifically targeted qualitative interviews, level of political awareness and factors which influence it are both verified. Quantitative survey proves sufficient level of political knowledge among grammar schools students and also positive influence of school as an institution thanks to special seminars. At the same time it confirms much higher level of knowledge in comparison with secondary schools students. Personal interviews with selected students verify their high level of political commitment; on the other hand respondents do not acknowledge influence of school in this particular topic. As study proves, factors which affect followed variables originate more likely from free time activities. Also gender and as far as school is concerned, only theme of special seminars is important. Key words: political awareness, political engagement, key competences
Public Policy Options in Increasing Political Sophistication of Adult Citizens in the Czech Republic
Černá, Lucie ; Veselý, Arnošt (advisor) ; Mička, Pavel (referee)
This thesis presents the theme of low political awareness of adult citizens in the Czech Republic from the perspective of public policy. Low level of political awareness is conceived as a major reason that voters are not able to vote according to their real interests. The focus is on whether the problem is a topic that public policy should pursue and whether it is possible to find a public policy tools to deal with it. It is mainly based on the three-dimensional model of political sophistication, Evert Vedung's concept of public policy instruments, the concept of the correct voting and ideas of participatory democracy. Despite the fact that the given issue bears the hallmarks of an ideal problem for public policy and we can find some tools that could improve the current situation, there are broader factors that hinder their operations. These include the impact of previous undemocratic regime or the behavior of politicians. Such barriers are closely related to the way of human thinking and can be removed only with difficulty.

In theoretical part I dealt with models of democracy and the significance of political participation in these models. Afterwards I described political participation tools, especially voter turnout, its decline in Czech Republic and its consequences. In connection with voter turnout I dealt with election campaigns in Czech Republic, especially the negative campaigns, and with the role of mass media in politics. Theoretical part is followed by case study. Its aim is to discover and describe, if the students of Faculty of International Relations are interested in faculty affairs, if they are aware of political situation, if they take part in political participation and what are the factors that influence them the most in decision-making and in their long term political preferences.
